Urban Design/Landscape Architecture - one and the same?
posted by Helenna Crowd (new) on October, 26th 2010
Seeing that this is an urban design social network I thought that I would post the question is Urban Design/Landscape Architecture - one and the same. My question comes as I recently attended a conference and the question was asked how many urban designers were in the room? and how many landscape architects were in the room? The debate started when no one could understand what is an urban designer? As the planners said they were! I am opening this up to the forum. Helenna

Well I think that the first thing is to start with dialogue between the associations. There also needs to be a wakeup call to many professionals who label as what they do UD, when it isn't. UD is not merely any design in the urban realm or another name for streetscape design. They need to upskill if they want to compete with real urban designers who can truly cross boundaries and coordinate multi disciplinary issues.

Why can't we as individual designers in our choosen profession just be designers of the built environment??? that we specialise in a discipline!! ohhh i get it!!! it's because it enables us not to communicate with one another and blame the other for the mistakes when they happen. Then say this is how you design and cut out the other built environment discipline. Excellent.....

If we all worked together in harmony and for the SAME outcome as the client would expect, we would actually all get on and deliver the project beyond the clients expectations.... but with titles comes egos and then we become territorial on the project.... result not a great outcome. collaboration is a "URBAN" myth
